SMOKING CESSATION

The Sunshine Coast Division of General Practice (SCDGP) recognises that tobacco cessation interventions are the most effective and cost effective interventions in medicine.

We have engaged Adjunct Associate Professor Renee Bittoun to create an Intensive Clinical Tobacco Dependence Treatment resource for the primary health care setting. Renee is Director of the Smokers’ Clinics in the SW Sydney Area Health Service and Associate Professor, Head of the Smoking Cessation Unit in the Faculty of Medicine, Brain Mind Institute, at the University of Sydney.

The Intensive Clinical Tobacco Dependence Treatment: A Guide for Clinicians has been created by Renee and her colleagues. The resource includes guidelines for treatment, a comprehensive patient assessment form, relapse prevention sessions, behavioural tips, treatment flowcharts and is available on CD - please contact Renate Millonig on 5456 8804.

OTHER RESOURCES

As a 'Closing the Gap' initiative, the Sunshine Coast Division of General Practice and North Coast Aboriginal Corporation for Community Health (NCACCH) have received funding to undertake an 'Indigenous Smoking Cessation Pilot Program'. The project called 'No Durri for this Murri' commenced implementation with client registrations in November 2010 and will be monitored until June 2012.

NCACCH cardholders need to register with the program, visit their GP at least every three months, request counselling, and receive regular support from NCACCH staff as well as Commonwealth Respite Services staff (as their 'Quit Coach'). Selected Pharmacists in the region provide smoking cessation products at no cost to registered clients. GPs and Practice Nurses are encouraged to support clients using the Intensive Clinical Tobacco Dependance Treatment: Guide for Clinicians and use the new 'No Durri for this Murri' Quit Visit forms.

Practitioners involved with the NCACCH Service Access Scheme use the new ‘Quit Visit’ Form to record interventions to assist cardholders in quitting smoking.

For further information about this project you may contact Renate Millonig on 5456 8804.
