SMOKING CESSATION
The Sunshine Coast Division of General Practice (SCDGP) recognises that tobacco cessation interventions are the most effective and cost effective interventions in medicine.
Please take a look at the short Brief Intervention videos on the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training website Very Brief Advice on Smoking: An online training module.
We have engaged Adjunct Associate Professor Renee Bittoun to create an Intensive Clinical Tobacco Dependence Treatment resource for the primary health care setting. Renee is Director of the Smokers’ Clinics in the SW Sydney Area Health Service and Associate Professor, Head of the Smoking Cessation Unit in the Faculty of Medicine, Brain Mind Institute, at the University of Sydney.
The Intensive Clinical Tobacco Dependence Treatment: A Guide for Clinicians has been created by Renee and her colleagues. The resource includes guidelines for treatment, a comprehensive patient assessment form, relapse prevention sessions, behavioural tips, treatment flowcharts and is available on CD - please contact Renate Millonig on 5456 8804.

OTHER RESOURCES
As a 'Closing the Gap' Initiative, the Sunshine Coast Division of General Practice (SCDGP) in partnership with North Coast Aboriginal Corporation for Community Health (NCACCH) received funding to undertake an 'Indigenous Smoking Cessation Pilot Program'. The project called 'No Durri for this Murri' commenced implementation with client registrations in November 2010.
On 2 April 2012, contracts with GPs, Pharmacists and the SCDGP in relation to this program were terminated. From this date, ‘No Durri for this Murri Quit Visit’ forms previously lodged by Practitioners and/or Practice Nurses will no longer be available. In addition, information and products from Pharmacists will no longer be processed by the SCDGP.
